Mental Health awareness in the work place


The topic of mental health has become one that has become extremely important over the past couple years and I would dare to say even more so during then period that the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak.

In deciding to share my thoughts on this, let me hasten to say that I am not a doctor neither am I an authority on this topic. This is merely just my thoughts and an aim to shed additional light on mental health and its awareness with specific focus on its prevalence in the corporate world.

Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it's often neglected in the corporate world. Despite the many strides made in recent years, the stigma surrounding mental health continues to prevent many individuals from seeking the help they need.

In this article, in discussing the importance of mental health awareness in the workplace, I will look at possible ways to promote mental health and well-being, and resources available for employees who may be struggling with mental health issues.

Why is Mental Health Important in the Workplace?

Mental health is important in the workplace for several reasons. First, a healthy workforce is a productive workforce. When employees are healthy, both physically and mentally, they're more likely to be engaged and productive at work. On the other hand, when employees are struggling with mental health issues, they may experience reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher turnover rates.

Second, mental health issues can be costly for employers. According to the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion each year in lost productivity. In addition to lost productivity, mental health issues can also result in increased healthcare costs, disability claims, and workers' compensation claims.

We also can just look simply on the fact that promoting mental health and well-being in the workplace is just the right thing to do. Employees spend a significant portion of their lives at work, and it is important that they feel supported and valued by their employer. Promoting mental health and well-being can help to create a positive work culture and improve employee morale.

There are several ways that employers can promote mental health and well-being in the workplace. Here are some examples:

  • Create a Positive Work Environment: A positive work environment can help to reduce stress and anxiety among employees. This can be achieved by fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and open communication. Employers should encourage employees to share their thoughts and ideas, and provide opportunities for feedback. However, if employees are sharing their thoughts, the expectation is that efforts will be made by the employers to voice the value that is found in these thoughts and not use what is shared agains the employee at a later date.

  • Offer Mental Health Benefits: Providing access to mental health benefits can make a significant difference in the lives of employees. This can include access to counselling services, mental health screenings, and employee assistance programs. Employers should ensure that these benefits are easily accessible and that employees are aware of them.

  • Encourage Work-Life Balance: Balancing work and personal life can be challenging, but it is important for overall well-being. Employers can encourage work-life balance by offering flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or flexible schedules. They can also encourage employees to take breaks and time off when needed. What is also important is that the practice of taking work home after work hours should be discouraged by the employer.

  • Employee education: Educating employees about mental health can help to reduce stigma and promote awareness. Employers can provide training on topics such as stress management, mindfulness, and mental health first aid.

  • Create a Supportive Culture: A supportive culture can help employees feel valued and supported. This can include providing opportunities for professional development and growth, recognizing and rewarding employee contributions, and promoting work-life balance.

Resources Available for Employees

If an employee is struggling with mental health issues, it's important that they know they're not alone. There are many resources available to help, including:

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs): EAPs are confidential counselling services that are available to employees and their families. They can provide support for a range of mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, and depression.

Mental Health Screening Tools: There are several online screening tools that can help employees determine whether they may be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. These tools can provide guidance on seeking further support.

Crisis Hotlines: In a crisis situation, employees can call a crisis hotline for immediate support. These hotlines are staffed by trained professionals who can provide guidance and support.

Mental Health Providers: Employers can provide information on mental health providers.

In conclusion, mental health awareness is critical in the corporate world for both employers and employees. By promoting mental health and well-being in the workplace, employers can improve employee engagement, productivity, and morale, while reducing healthcare costs and absenteeism. Furthermore, it's important for employers to create a supportive work environment that encourages open communication, work-life balance, and access to mental health benefits.

As individuals, it is essential that we recognise the importance of mental health and seek the help we need when we are struggling. There are many resources available to us, including employee assistance programs, mental health screening tools, crisis hotlines, and mental health providers.

Mental health is a vital aspect of overall well-being, and it is time that we start taking it more seriously in the workplace. By working together to promote mental health awareness and support, we can create a healthier and happier workforce for all.
